5 days after shooting, gangster lands behind bars

LUDHIANA: Police here on Saturday arrested gangster Chota Lalla in connection with the December 24 shooting near Damoria Bridge.
Rajesh Nagar resident Vijay Sidhu, alias Chota Lalla, was arrested when he was travelling in a silver-coloured Hyundai Verna near the city bus stand. Lalla, and his accomplices Sahil Sharma, Mota and two unidentified youngsters, had fired at Jasdev Kumar Jimmy (32) when he had confronted them over a monetary dispute.
Jimmy had alleged that Lall and his accomplices had snatched Rs 22,000 from a friend of his on the day of the crime. When he went to confront them near Damoria Bridge, Lall and second accused Sahil Sharma of New Tagore Nagar fired thrice at him and one of the bullets hit him, Jimmy has alleged.
The case has been registered at Division I police station.
Jimmy is a resident of Cinema Road, Naali Mohalla. However, police are yet to arrest the remaining accused in the case— Mota, who is Lalla’s cousin, Sahil and two youths who are yet to be identified. Police are yet to ascertain Mota’s actual name.
Additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP) Gurpreet Singh said Lalla had fled to Jalandhar after the shooting, and lived in a gurdwara and then a shelter home there. He returned to the city a few days ago.
He said they got information about Lalla driving around in his car near the bus stand, and a police team arrested them himafter scanning the area.
Police said Lalla was not carrying the revolver used in the crime. Lalla has told the police that Sahil owned the firearm and he had taken it away from Lalla after the crime. He added that they had already launched a manhunt to arrest Sahil aqnd that he would be arrested soon.
Police said Motu and other two accused were just accompanying Sahil and Lall, and they did not play a major role in the crime. They added that Lalla had continued to claim that he fired in self defence as Jimmy and his friends had attacked them with bricks and bottles.
In his complaint, Jimmy had alleged that the accused had snatched money from a friend of his. Before the incident, the accused and the complainant were said to be each other’s aides.
The accused are facing charges under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 506 (criminal intimidation), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon) and 149 (unlawful assembly) of Indian Penal Code (IPC), and also under the Arms Act.
Accused in 8 cases

Most recently, Lalla was jailed for possession of illegal weapon and was released on bail about a month ago. Police added that Lalla was facing financial woes and had even taken the Hyundai Verna car he drove from an old friend. He had borrowed the car to meet his sister.
