The Kerala Students Union (KSU) has condemned the alleged attempt to forcibly involve girl students in higher secondary schools and colleges in the proposed women's wall on January 1.
KSU president K.M. Abhijith told the media here on Sunday that they would seek legal recourse against officials and teachers who forced students to participate in the programme. He said that some of the teachers and non-teachers in higher secondary schools and some colleges were found to be actively campaigning for the event and persuading students.
“Head of the departments have been sent letters seeking students’ participation. In a college in Kozhikode district, teachers were found to be going from one classroom to another to talk about it,” he said.
Mr. Abhijith said this was against an order of the Kerala High Court which had said girls aged above 18 should not be forced to participate in the event.
He criticised Mahatma Gandhi University, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technological University, and Calicut University for postponing the examinations scheduled on the day. Mr. Abhijith pointed out that this would lead to a lot of troubles for the students as the results would get delayed further.
The KSU leader sought action against university authorities who took the decision to defer the examinations. The KSU had sought an appointment with the Governor, who is also the Chancellor of universities to bring this issue to his attention, he added.
