NEW DELHI: The crime branch has blown the lid off a drug supply module that ordered consignments from other countries through the dark web and received them in Delhi via international courier firms. Two suspects, who are in their early 20s and study in a city college, have been arrested. Cops are looking for other members of the cartel.
The police have recovered consignments containing imported marijuana worth several lakhs of rupees. These were to be sold for New Year parties, they said.
Police said they had received information that two youths from west Delhi, Rhythm and Sahil, were involved in importing and supplying drugs through the internet. The informer had tipped the cops that the drugs were being supplied in a Honda Jazz car with a 6142 registration number.
“As per the information, the two youths were to come to the FedEx office at Rama Road area near Moti Nagar to collect their parcels. A special team, led by DCP Ram Gopal Naik, was formed to bust the gang,” a senior officer said.
DCP Naik formed two teams, comprising ACP Arvind Kumar and inspector Shiv Darshan, to develop more intelligence and register a case. The teams then landed at the FedEx office around 9.15am and briefed the staff and the manager, Hitesh, about the operation and sought their assistance.
The cops then waited till 12pm for the two youths to arrive, but nobody turned up. However, their patience bore fruit when a delivery boy informed the manager that he had received a call from one Sahil who was asking about five parcels. Courier company employees told police that they had received delivery for this man in the past too.
The cops then laid a trap. As instructed by the police, the delivery boy asked the suspect to send him his photo ID on WhatsApp.
“Around 2.50pm, a car with registration number 6142 stopped at the office. The parcel was received by a man sitting in the passenger’s seat, who was later identified as Rhythm (22). The police teams swooped down upon the two and seized the parcels,” the officer added.
They also recovered 50 grams of charas from the pocket of the driver, Sahil (25).
Each parcel had gift-wrapped packets inside and were titled Fisher Price, Sunny Day, Bay II, Cheery Pie, White Cookie and Blue Cookie. There was around 7kg of imported marijuana in the packs.
