MADIKERI: Forest guards got lights in their quarters at Balele forest range in the district, thanks to a Bengaluru-based non-profit organization.
Guard Book Consultant Foundation has donated solar lamps to the quarters of those who work 24x7 at Kumbarakatte-Gunuguru range near Balele. Ten guards, who work at the range, alert forest officials and villagers on elephant movements and other threats. They are always on their toes, checking wild elephants’ entry into villages in the region.
Tho ugh they were sanctioned five quarters eight years ago, there was no electricity connection. “We could not use our cellphones as we could not charge them. We were given battery-charged torches which we use in nights,” said one of the forest guards.
Prasanna Kumar, ACF of Nagarahole forest range, said: “It is tough to install power lines inside the forest range. Despite that, the foundation has done the needful. Not just lights, our guards can now use ot her electrical equipment, including laptops and cellphones,” he added.
