MG Road: Can Gurgaon reclaim its 'road less travelled' in the New Year?

| Dec 31, 2018, 01:00 IST
Whenever a year passes, there is a lot you tend to miss about it – memories, personal growth, achievements, milestones. But one thing is certain, there is a lot Gurugrammers won’t miss about 2018, and topping that list is the chaos and mayhem that is MG Road. Once the glittering Mall Mile of NCR, the 1km stretch between MG Road and Sikanderpur Metro stations is a case study of how the mighty have fallen. Over the years, as incidents of molestation and assault shot up in the area, a lot of regular partygoers started avoiding it. Today, after 9pm, the former nightlife hub is hardly frequented by partygoers or moviegoers. And who can blame them? All you spot there are drunk gentlemen engaging in some car-o-bar, soliciting on the pavements, and all variety of shady characters – despite supposedly heavy police presence. After countless protests from residents, things ‘changed’ this year as the police cracked down on pubs and massage parlours engaged in illegal activities. But soon, it was back to square one for the beleaguered entertainment hub. Residents (even those who live close by) continue to avoid the area as much as they can. When Gurgaon looks back at 2018, MG Road is not something that will invoke nostalgia. Can we hope to reclaim it in 2019?
