COIMBATORE: The forest department deployed its personnel at Perumal Kovil Pathy here after a leopard attacked two calves on Friday.
The owner of the calves, R Rangasamy, said his wife had witnessed the incident. “On Friday evening, she had gone to gather the cows for milking. While the cows had run away, two calves had fallen in the nearby rivulet. A leopard attacked the calves. It killed one and injured the other calf,” the farmer said.
The forest department has stationed two personnel at the spot after the attack.
An official with the department said they had been studying the area to ascertain if two leopards were roaming in the area. “We have been studying the pugmarks and found that there is only one leopard. After ascertaining its age, we will place a cage to trap it,” he said.
Meanwhile, the department has placed a cage to trap a leopard that has been frequenting farms at Pasuvapalayam near Sathyamangalam in Erode. “On Friday, it attacked a dog. On hearing the dog’s cries, people sounded drums and chased it away,” an official said. “The department installed cameras at the spot. On confirming the presence of the leopard from the visuals, we placed a trap on Saturday. We have placed a dog as bait,” he said.
