Extremists get 5 years’ imprisonment

A special court for exclusive trial of bomb blast cases in Poonamallee on Friday sentenced seven Islamist extremists to five years’ imprisonment on charges of hatching criminal conspiracy and manufacturing and possessing explosive substances in Kodungaiyur in 1997.

According to the CB-CID, nine extremists had between December 1996 and March 1997 hatched a conspiracy to manufacture explosives to attack Hindu Munnani, RSS and BJP leaders, to avenge the killing of one of their leaders. The police had seized explosive materials and arrested nine persons.

N. Vijayaraj, special public prosecutor for the CB-CID, produced 44 witnesses before the court.

At the end of the trial, special judge P. Chenthurpandi pronounced the judgement, convicting seven of them to five years’ imprisonment.
