PALANPUR: At a time when communalism, provincialism and linguistic differences are being kindled for political gains, a sleepy village on Palanpur-Ahmedabad state highway has shown a ray of hope for communal amity and brotherhood.
Kanodar village witnessed a unique event on Tuesday when four Brahmin men performed the marriage rituals of their Muslim soul sister’s children, a girl and a boy. They organized the marriage ceremony of both the children as per Islamic as well as Hindu customs and gifted them cash and gold worth Rs 4,11,111.
A nurse by profession, Raukaiya Mukhi was moved to tears following the extraordinary act of her soul brothers —Ketan Joshi, Vinod Joshi, Chetan Joshi and Chirag Joshi of Dangiya village. More than 150 people from Dangiya witnessed the marriage of Mukhi’s children — Shrimin and Arman.
The story of these Hindu brothers and Muslim sister goes way back to 1987 when Raukaiya was first appointed as a nurse in Dangiya village.
“I was in search of a house when Jagdish Chandra Joshi gave me a portion of his house to live in as tenant. From the day I moved in, I was treated like his daughter,” Raukaiya said.
Jagdish Joshi passed away in 1990. But I continued to get the love and respect from the Joshi family. Late Jagdishbhai’s wife Kokilaben continued to shower affection on me like her daughter, while her sons loved me as big brothers,” said an emotional Raukaiya with choked voice. “Even after my transfer, our family relations continued,” she added.
“Rukaiyaben’s invite for her daughter Shrimin and son Arman’s marriage filled us with joy. This also reminded us that we have to perform our duties as maternal uncles to the two kids,” Ketan said.
The crowd that witnessed the marriage was all praise for the brothers, who according to them have written a new chapter in communal harmony for Kanodar village.
“Palanpur has always set an example in communal harmony. Probably it was the first memorable thing that we have been able to gift to our sister,” Ketan added.
