MUMBAI: A businessman, Haresh Mehta, was arrested by the Bandra police on Saturday after he rammed his vehicle into a photojournalist’s stationary car on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. The photojournalist, Umesh Goswami, his female relative, Neelima Balwani (38), and domestic help Samiksha (21), who were seated in his car sustained injuries. The trio had gone to Siddhivinayak temple in Prabhadevi and was on their way back home to Bandra around 3.20pm when the mishap occurred.
“Goswami’s car had stopped at the toll booth to pay. Suddenly, Mehta came from the rear and rammed in. He could not control the car,” said a police officer. Goswami’s car was mangled, said eyewitnesses. The injured persons were administered preliminary treatment and allowed to go home. Mehta, meanwhile, was taken into custody by the police.
“Mehta has told us that he was headed back home after attending a wedding. He has said that he couldn’t control the speed of his vehicle when he approached the toll booth,” said another police officer.
The businessman has been booked under sections 279 (rash driving on a public way), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life) of Indian Penal Code.
