NEW DELHI: In a setback to Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal United, former cabinet minister and president of JD(U)’s Jharkhand unit, Jaleshwar Mahato, joined Congress on Saturday.
After joining the party, Mahato met with Congress chief Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi on Saturday. A two-term MLA from Baghmara, Mahato, was cabinet minister in successive governments run by Babulal Marandi and Arjun Munda, and is regarded as a significant acquisition for Congress ahead of the 2019 assembly polls.
A “clean” politican considered close to JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar, Mahato’s departure from the party is attributed to “conflicts” with the NDA.
