Man immolates self as kin refuse to return loan

RAJKOT: A 45-year-old man immolated himself after his relatives refused to return the money they had borrowed from him at Patkhilori village of Gondal taluka of Rajkot on Wednesday evening.
Police said that Bhanu Chavda was rushed to Rajkot Civil Hospital where the doctor said he had received burn injuries on 60% of his body. Police claimed that eyewitnesses have alleged that Chavda was drunk at the time of self-immolation.

According to police, Chavda, a resident of Derdi Kumbhaji village, had given loan of Rs 20,000 to his distant relatives in Patkhilori village few years ago.

He had been demanding repayment since past few months and had also allegedly threatened his relatives who in the past had informed local police about it. Based on the complaint in the past, police had detained Chavda.

Police said that on Wednesday, Chavda called his relatives Pravin, Kanu and Shardaben and demanded his money back. However, the trio said they can’t pay him and also allegedly threatened him with dire consequences, added police.


Chavda then went to their house, sprinkled some inflammable substance and set himself ablaze.


Investigation officer of Gondal taluka police A V Jadeja said, “According to eyewitnesses, Chavda was drunk at the time and he himself had come with kerosene.”


Based on Chavda’s statement, police booked Pravin, Kanu and Sharda for criminal intimidation and has initiated probe.
