BENGALURU/KOLAR: Two railway gangmen on night patrol on Bengaluru-Chennai tracks were run over by a train and instantly killed near Varadapura, about 8km from Bangarpet railway junction.

Harisingh Meena, 25, and Ramaswamy, 30, both gangmen attached to Bangarpet junction, were patrolling one track, while a third employee, Ramarkrishna, was on another track when the accident occurred around 2.20am.

According to railway sources, trains arrived on both the tracks. Meena and Ramaswamy thought only one train was approaching and assumed it was on the other track. They continued to work and were run over by the Chennai Express. Ramakrishna jumped and escaped from the train zipping on the track he was patrolling.

While Meena was from Rajasthan, Ramaswamy belonged to Gudapalli village in Chittoor, police said. Meena had been awarded in the past for detecting two track failures and dedication to his job.
