BHUBANESWAR: Women can get sanitary napkins in cheaper rates under Ujjwala Sanitary Napkins Initiative, a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative taken by oil marketing companies.

Under this programme, 100 manufacturing units will come up at the common services centres (CSCs) covering 93 blocks in all 30 districts of the state. Some of them have started preparing pads. Union petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan will launch the sanitary napkins on Sunday.

“Cost of setting up these manufacturing units is Rs 2.94 crore. Each facility will have the capacity to produce 1200-2000 pads each day. It will have a sterilization room to ensure that the napkins are sterilised before they are packed for use of rural women,” said Sanjay Kumar Jha, general manager (LPG), Indian Oil Corporation Limited.

The CSCs have been provided with raw material, enough to make 45,000-50,000 pads. Each napkin packet will be priced at Rs 42 (each pack containing eight pads). Ujjwala didi, a woman volunteer who supports and give services to Ujjawala beneficiaries, can motivate the rural women about use of pad and sell it directly to the women folk.

The companies will provide machineries and raw material for one time. Then the women will manage it and earn by selling the pads.

“Around six Ujjwala beneficiaries can get work in each manufacturing unit. They will also sell it to women directly and women can buy it from the CSC,” said Swarnaprava Singh, state head of CSC, adding, “The napkins are bio-degradable in nature. It will not create any infection or itching.”

This initiative not only provides hygienic pads at doorsteps but also provide jobs to Ujjwala beneficiaries. The women will be provided with proper training in manufacturing and sale of sanitary napkins.

According to the National Family Health Survey-4, overall use of sanitary napkins in Odisha is 33.5 per cent. Only 42.8 per cent of rural women between the age of 15 and 24 years use proper hygienic methods of protection during menstruation, said the report. Keeping this in mind, the oil companies came up with this initiative, official sources said.

“This initiative has been started on pilot basis. If the business module gets success, more number of manufacturing units will come up in the state,” said Jha.
