COIMBATORE: The cybercrime cell of the city police on Thursday arrested two men, who duped a construction worker and withdrew Rs 15,000 from his account.
They were identified as P Kapil of Gudalur in the Nilgiris district and his friend J John Joseph of Highways Colony on Trichy Road in the city. “K Muruganandam, a 54-year-old construction worker from Kannampalayam, was waiting in a queue at SBI’s ATM centre at Singanallur on November 20. The duo was also in the queue. Muruganandam sought their help to withdraw money from his account and told them the password. Kapil took Muruganandam’s debit card and typed some random numbers as password. He told the labourer that the card was not working and gave him another debit card. When the man left the place disappointed, the duo used his card to withdraw Rs 15,000 from the ATM machine,” a police officer said.
Cybercrime police had registered a case and were trying to trace the duo for the last one month.
Police seized a motorcycle and Rs 4,000 from Kapil and a mobile phone from John Joseph.
The duo told police that they had cheated several people using the same method in Tirupur and Sulur. They were lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison.
