Thiruvananthapuram: In a first-of-its-kind move in the state, a corporation ward has roped in a public figure to promote its green initiatives.
Musician Jassie Gift is now the face of Kunnukuzhy, which has been gearing up to become the first green ward in the state, and will officially promote the activities undertaken by the ward in this regard.

Kunnukuzhy ward councillor I P Binu has also tied up with an FM station in the city to air a show titled ‘Voice of Kunnukuzhy’ to propagate the green initiatives.

Haritha Kerala Mission vice-chairperson T N Seema declared Gift as the brand ambassador of the ward on Thursday, at the closing ceremony of the seven-day NSS camp held at Barton Hill College of Engineering. MLA I B Satheesh and mayor V K Prasanth attended the function.

According to Binu, the objective was to achieve the tag of ‘complete green ward’. “As the initial steps, we are beautifying the walls of the ward with the help of around 400 students from Govt City VHSS, St Mary’s Pattom, Govt Sanskrit College and city campus of Sree Sankara University of Sanskrit. Gardens are also planned across the ward in a bid to decrease public waste disposal. Jassie is a frequent visitor of the ward and is quite familiar with the people across the ward. He can help fetch sponsorships to fund our initiative,” he said.

Apart from students, local artists led by artist Suresh are also involved in graffiti works at Law College Junction.

A few of the graffiti are inspired by the unity during the August floods. Two tea stalls situated at the junction also received a facelift with bamboo frames decorating their front area.
