One of the highlights of the 2019 edition of ‘ECR Street Festival’ is a waste collection drive

Sri Kapaleeswarar Nagar Residents Welfare Association has added a new feature to its annual “ECR Street Festival” which marks the Pongal season.

On the first day of the four-day Pongal festival, the Association will be organising a recyclable waste collection drive. Old papers, utensils, furniture, plastic products and worn-out electronic gadgets and anything else that can be recycled can be brought. It is a move aimed at preventing people from burning old goods on Bhogi day.

The drive, supported by M/s Wastewinn Recyclers, will be held on January 6 at the Greater Chennai Corporation park in Kapaleeswarar Nagar. At the park, a specific bin will be kept for each type of recyclable waste, and visitors have to drop their discards accordingly.

Some of the events at the community get-together are: competitions in kolam and cooking native cuisines and traditional games such as Pallankuzhi, Pambaram and Uriadithal.

There will be stalls offering traditional food like Paruthi Paal, Chukku Malli Kapi, and Kuzhi Paniyaram. There will also be folk-art performances, including Mayilattam, Karagattam, Silambam and Poikaal Kudhirai.

Bullock cart rides, pottery making and Kili Josiyam are part of the celebration.

There is an entry ticket of ₹50 per person. Sri Kapaleeswarar Nagar Residents Welfare Association invites residents of other neighbourhoods to take part in the celebration. For details, call 94440 51702.
