TCGL plans sea plane service to Statue of Unity

BHARUCH/SURAT: After the launch of helicopter service at Statue of Unity (SoU) site, the Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Ltd (TCGL) is seriously considering a sea plane service to Kevadiya from Ahmedabad.

TCGL managing director Jenu Devan said that tourists will be able to avail sea plane facility from Ahmedabad and three other places to reach SoU site.

“We are aggressively developing various amenities and facilities so that maximum number of tourists can come to this site of world’s tallest statue and make it a global tourism destination,” Devan said.

Over 4 lakh tourists have already visited SoU since its inauguration on October 31.

Earlier, the state government had planned to start sea plane services from Sabarmati river in Ahmedabad to other feasible locations in which Statue of Unity has now been added. The civil aviation department has also cleared technical feasibility report for this project. Devan said the tenders for expression of interest will be released soon and the sea plane services are expected to start in next few months.

The state tourist department is also evaluating possibilities to set up a modern theme-based amusement park near the statue.


Meanwhile, union minister of state for tourism KJ Alphons visited the Statue of Unity on Wednesday and assured support of his ministry in developing the place


“In view of estimated 50 lakh tourists visiting Statue of Unity, union government has decided to extend support including financial support to develop various facilities here,” said Alphons.


He said that development of various tourist facilities will attract more visitors which in turn will helps in socio-economic growth of a region. “The facilities will be developed in such a way that tourist would prefer to stay here for two-three days,” the junior minister said.
