CHENNAI: The Madras high court has ordered notice to the state government on a PIL to provide temporary shelters and blankets to homeless people across the state during winter.

A division bench of Justice M Sathyanarayanan and Justice P Rajamanickam issued the notice, order on a PIL filed by advocate M Muruganantham. The bench directed the government to file a status report on the availability of such facilities by January 29.

The petition said several thousand homeless people suffered in cold as they could not afford a roof over their heads. Claiming the governmentis bound to save every individual, the petitioner said tax collected from carbon emitting industries could be used to compensate the homeless. He said he was constrained to move the court as representations to authorities on the issue did not evoke response.
