CHANDIGARH: Two days after a statue of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi was vandalized in Ludhiana, four signboards of the Rajiv Gandhi College Bhawan were sprayed with black paint here at Panjab University on Thursday. These signboards bearing the name of Rajiv Gandhi were in three languages - Punjabi, Hindi and English.

Moreover, the incident happened on the day when the university played a host for the 34th north zone inter-university youth festival and Punjab finance minister Manpreet Badal was the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony on Thursday.

"I strongly condemn the incident and such acts won't be tolerated. We were concentrating on the youth festival but it is very unfortunate that the incident has happened at Panjab University. We have started our investigation and those found guilty of spraying these boards with black paint would be dealt with a legal action," said Ashwani Koul, chief of university security, PU.

Two signboards outside the Rajiv Gandhi College Bhawan, one outside the boys' hostel number 4 and another signboard near the Ankur School in Panjab University were blackened. After the incident came to light, the black spray from the signboards was removed.

The university is yet to check the CCTV footage of the surrounding areas where the incident happened. "All the signboards were on the roadside and the cameras cannot be installed everywhere. We are yet to check the CCTV footage of the areas where these signboards were installed," added Koul.

SHO of Sector 11, Rajiv Kumar, reached the spot after he was informed about the incident and said, "The police will investigate the matter after we receive a complaint. If the university lodges a complaint with the police, then only we will be able to start the investigation in the matter.”

However, this is not the first time that the signboards were sprayed with paint. It was in October earlier this year that Hindi text on signboards at Panjab University was smeared with black paint. All the three signboards smeared with black paint were located in dark areas, where there were no CCTV cameras.

NSUI condemns the attack

National Students Union of India national coordinator Manoj Lubana submitted a written complaint to the Panjab University authorities to identify the culprit and take strict action against those involved in the act. "It is very unfortunate that such an incident has happened in a university. Such misconduct should not be tolerated and an FIR should be filed against the miscreants involved in the act," said Lubana.
