Periyakulam tank soon to greet you with fresh breeze
TNN | Dec 28, 2018, 00:59 ISTCoimbatore: A few months down the line, Coimbatoreans would be able to feel the fresh breeze and spend quality time with their family at the banks of Periyakulam tank as the city corporation has been speeding up the lake restoration work along the northern bunds of the tank on Perur Bypass Road.
A corporation official involved in the project said, “We are planning to complete the first stretch of Periyakulam tank by April to coincide with the summer vacation to school students. The initial stretch which we have been doing on pilot basis would be ready by mid-January. It is going to be the first recreational space created in the city on par with international standard.”
The initial stretch would be 85m out of the 1.8km of northern bund of the tank.
Under the ‘Smart City Mission Project’, the civic body has commenced restoration and rejuvenation of the Periyakulam lake on the Perur Bypass side at the cost of Rs 39.74 crore, rejuvenation of walkers’ plaza along the road cutting across Valankulam lake of people promenade at the cost of Rs 24.31 crore and rejuvenation of Valankulam lake under Valankulam flyover at the cost of Rs 23.83 crore on July 5.
Space along the bund would be divided into four sections, the official said. While saplings would be planted along the road, cycle track, footpath, users’ space and bioswale – a landscaping feature to harvest and hold rainwater - would be established.
“At present, work is going on at the users’ space and once ground level work is completed, pre-casted ornamental things like benches and lamps would be installed. The bund of the land would be decorated with rock and material like stones and pebbles,” the official added.
R Sumathi, a resident of Peelamedu, said, “Unlike Chennai or other tier-two cities, we do not have any recreational facilities or even walkers’ space other than at Race Course in the city. We are forced to take our children to shopping malls or to movies and elderly to temples during their leisure time.”
“Once this facility comes up, we will have a decent recreation facility which suits people of all age group and need not take elderly and children to two different locations,” she added.
