MUMBAI: With the state assembly elections around the corner, the Maharashtra cabinet on Thursday approved to implement the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission for its 17 lakh employees and five lakh pensioners from January 1.
The long-standing demand was the cause behind several stand-offs between the government and the employees.
The cabinet has also approved the release of the arrears since January 2016 in the five equal installments over the next five years. The state government will require an estimated Rs 21,000 crore in the first year of the implementation of the recommendations.
After the implementation of the scheme, the average hike in the monthly salary of the state government employees is expected to be around 16% or 2.58 times the basic salary.
However, employees have not shown any enthusiasm over the decision. The union of Gazetted officers has said that they will continue with their decision to mass bunk on January 5.
The union has said that they will be pressing for their other demands including five-day working on the lines of the central government employees and increase in the retirement age from 58 years to 60 years.
