Contributions to CMDRF cross Rs 3,000 crore
TNN | Dec 27, 2018, 23:41 ISTThiruvananthapuram: The contributions to chief minister’s distress relief fund (CMDRF) since August 14, has crossed Rs 3,000 crore. Till Wednesday, the contributions stood at Rs 3,000.44 crore, of which Rs 210.1 crore was received through electronic payments.
As much as Rs 2,738.14 crore was received through cash and cheques, while Rs 52.2 crore was received through unified payment interface, virtual payment address and QR payment mode. Till December 8, Rs 1,199.69 crore was spent by the government.
While Rs 457.30 crore was distributed among 7.37 lakh people who were affected by floods as immediate relief, Rs 1,256.55 crore was granted to rebuild 2,43,207 houses that suffered damages in the flood. Ernakulam (1,93,448), Alappuzha (1,66,345) and Thrissur (1,35,784) topped the list of beneficiaries who received immediate relief.
While people and organizations world over had liberally contributed to CMDRF, some initiatives of the government to raise funds — like the pressure tactic used to make forced contributions from government employees — earned criticism, including the high court.
At the same time, an RTI information revealed that as many as 284 cheques – handed over to CMDRF as contribution from various individuals and organizations – bounced when produced at banks.
Rebuild Kerala conclave tomorrow:
The Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Development Studies (RGIDS) will organize a one-day seminar on the topic ‘rebuilding Kerala-the way forward’ here on Saturday.
The conclave consisting of five sessions will be inaugurated by governor P Sathasivam.
Policymakers, experts from a host of thematic areas, political representatives and other stakeholders will present their views and brainstorm on the theme of the conclave. Former Union minister Jairam Ramesh will inaugurate the concluding session of the conclave.
Oppn leader to visit Ranni and Aranmula today:
Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala will visit the flood-affected in Ranni and Aranmula taluks of Pathanamthitta on Friday.
“The visit has been scheduled in the wake of complaints that many people have not received any aid from the government even 100 days after the floods,” said UDF convener Benny Behanan.
