Nagpur: 31st night has a celebratory ring to it and nobody wants to miss out on the fun. But concerns have been rising as liquor consumption has surged across genders and age. With city cops holding stringent checking for driving under influence (DUI) of alcohol, party goers and organizers alike are in a bit of a quandary.
The traffic cops are gearing up to prevent untoward incidents and DCP traffic Raj Tilak Raoushan has advised citizens to celebrate in a responsible manner. Saying that the permission to party till 5.30am comes with a rider, Raoushan adds, “The organizers have to ensure that there should not be any law and order disruption. To the public, I would say avoid rash driving, speeding and drunken driving to remain safe and keep others safe too.”
New year eve does not see very high sales of liquor like on Holi, says Girish Dewani, one of the biggest liquor distributor in the city. “Getting drunk on Holi is almost like a ritual but New Year Eve is more about fun and enjoyment,” he says. He adds that sales do rise on New Year Eve too by 40% and are more in West Nagpur.
“The fear of being detained for DUI is so big that now a lot of planning goes into a night out on New Year Eve,” says Nilay Verma, an event manager who in the past has organized many New Year Eve parties. “Safety concerns are genuine and I have decided to couple up with non-drinkers,” he adds.
Seizing the initiative are the hotels who are offering a night stay along with the gala and a late check out. “It is to ensure safety and the guest can enjoy New Year breakfast and brunch and check out late evening,” says Manoj Bali, general manager of Raddisson Blu. ‘Don’t drink and drive’ and ‘all sorted’ room package is what Centre Point hotel is offering. “This is at our hotel. At our lounge Pablo, we are tying up with Ola and Uber and our passes have a promo code for discounts on cabs as we want to encourage people to be safe,” says Angad Arora JT Managing director of the hotel.
The clubs see a handsome turnout of members and guest. But the unsavory incidents in recent past at these venues have put the management committees on high alert. “Stags will not be allowed and couples only above 21 years of age will get entry,” informs Girish Dewani, honorary secretary of CP Club. Though there is no definite theme for the party, the club will have a live band Karma and DJ Burner setting the mood on the lawns.
“We have a silver and black theme,” says Saket Daga, treasurer of Gondwana Club where a software has been installed to keep updating the identity of members and their guests. “CCTV cameras will be on at the club and we plan to shut entry at 11.45pm,” he informs.
