Labour room, operation theatre facilities to be improved

Health Minister K.K. Shylaja has said that the work for upgrading the Government District Hospital to the super-specialty level as per a master plan will be completed in 18 months. A meeting was held here the other day to review the master plan work.

A press release issued here quoted the Minister as saying that ₹56 crore of the ₹76 crore sanctioned by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) had already been released.

The tender proceedings for construction had already been completed. The balance amount would be released as and when the first phase work was completed, she said, adding that more funds would be sanctioned, if needed. The Minister told the meeting that the work was delayed due to the delay in securing various no objection certificates, including coastal zone clearance certificate.

Work soon

As the tender proceedings had been over, the construction work would begin soon, she said.

The work included demolition and renovation of existing buildings and construction of new structures.

Ms. Shylaja also said that the ongoing work to upgrade the labour room facilities in the hospital to the standard of LaQshya, a programme for improving labour room quality, was in the final phase. Separate cubicles would be set up to ensure privacy for women in labour.

Labour tables would be replaced with convenient beds, she said. The changes would include facilities to allow entry for husbands of women in labour to the labour room. Work was also in progress to arrange modern operation theatres in the hospital. The proceedings for appointing more staff in the hospital were in the final phase, the meeting was told.
