HYDERABAD : Three brothers, who vandalised Global Hospital, Lakdikapul, on Monday night after death of their mother, allegedly assaulted policemen too. Videos of the rampage became viral on Tuesday and they were taken into custody. Around 8.45pm on Monday, Shameem Begum, 45, a resident of Santosh Nagar, suffered cardiac arrest while undergoing treatment in medical intensive care unit (MICU). Minutes later, her three sons — Mohiuddin Ali Khan, 31, Mir Barkat Ali Khan,29, and Mir Mustafa Ali Khan,18 — went on rampage from MICU, which is on the second floor, itself accusing the doctors of negligence.

As they moved from floor to floor, they used every object in their sight (fire extinguisher, chair and computer) to create mayhem. At ground floor, they ransacked the reception desk and damaged glass panes. They even assaulted hospital security and duty manager Raj Kumar. Briefing the media on Tuesday, deputy commissioner of police (Central Zone) Viswa Prasad two constables rushed to the hospital by foot in seven minutes. A police patrol car too reached the spot in the next few minutes. By the time police reached the hospital, damage to property was already done.

As situation was slipping out of control, the constables alerted inspector Ch Saidi Reddy, who reached the spot. The inspector tried to talk to them, but he was assaulted. “The situation could be brought under control by 11.30pm. Based on complaints by hospital and Shameem’s family, two FIRs were registered,” the DCP added.

Stringent action must be taken against people who vandalized the hospital. The police should also provide adequate security so that doctors and nurses can carry out their duties without any fear

After additional force was rushed to the spot, police bundled them into police vehicles and sent them to the Narayanguda police station. The three were released on Tuesday morning on humanitarian grounds to attend their mother’s funeral. When contacted, Hyderabad police commissioner Anjani Kumar said: “If the policemen had resorted to lathicharge, it may have been a different situation. One has to understand the gravity of the situation and act. The accused will go to jail and we will strive for their conviction.”
