Nagpur: In a positive development, a comparison of the data in the past two years shows that the number of road accidents continue to be on the decline in Nagpur city police limits for the second consecutive year. Around 10.24 % less accidents took place in 2018 (from January to November end) as compared to the number of accidents reported in the same period in 2017.
According to statistics of road accidents compiled by Nagpur city traffic police, the city roads witnessed a decline in road accidents by almost 100. In current year, as many as 1,005 accidents took place from January to November 2018, while in last year the figure was 1,108.
But, the number of fatal accidents continues to be a cause of concern. The fatal accidents have increased by 7% from 195 to 201 in 2018 when 2017 was taken as reference point. When it comes to the number of deaths, there is a rise of 7% from 202 to 217 in 2018 when compared with previous year.
In 2016 calendar year, the city had registered 1,373 road accidents killing 310 persons in Nagpur police commissionerate jurisdiction.
The statistics further revealed that till the end of November, internal and inner ring road recorded the maximum road accident deaths at 589 and 125 respectively, followed by Wardha road (68), Amravati road (65), Jabalpur road (64), Chindwada Road (48) and Bhandara road (29).
Even though the traffic police concentrated on various safety measures, two-wheeler riders topped the list of deceased persons in road accidents with 93 people losing their lives. It was followed by 56 pedestrians, 15 bicyclists and 1 rickshaw rider losing their lives in accidents, respectively.
The enforcement by police has increased over the past couple of years and this is what gets reflected in the number of cases registered. As compared with 2017, the number of cases increased by 149% from 3.80 lakh in 2017 to 5.69 lakh cases in 2018.
Though deputy commissioner of police Raj Tilak Roushan was not available for comments, a senior officer attributed the decline in number of accidents to the awareness drives, which they have conducted over the past many years. The officer said that the initiatives like creating traffic awareness and correctional measures taken after identifying black spots coupled with extensive enforcement drives imposing fines and booking cases against drunk drivers yielded good results.
Traffic police found fault with the civic agencies for poor infrastructure and maintenance. Sources from traffic police pointed out that only 60% traffic signals out of 157 were working in Nagpur city. Besides, the signals are not synchronized. So many motorists especially youngsters jump signals thus leading to mishaps. Poor maintenance of footpaths, encroachments and lack of supervision on commercial establishments, which do not follow mandatory parking rules, are adding more to traffic woes and also contributing to accidents, sources pointed out.
