The State Human Rights Commission has taken suo-moto cognisance of the death of 22-year-old physically challenged youth in police custody and has ordered an investigation into the matter.

The Director General of Police should depute an officer not below the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police and submit a detailed report along with relevant documents to the Registrar within six weeks, the SHRC said.

Jayakumar, who was physically challenged, died after police detained him and two of his friends for enquiry into a burglary case at the Esplanade police station for two days.

Relatives of the youth claimed that he had died due to police torture. Inspector Gunasekaran has been placed under suspension while a magisterial probe was being conducted into the issue.
