NEW DELHI: A truck driver was charred to death after his parked vehicle caught fire near north Delhi’s Narela on Tuesday.

The driver was sleeping in the cabin of his truck when the vehicle went up in blaze at 2.45am. Two fire tenders were sent to the spot to douse the flames. DCP (Rohini) Rajneesh Gupta said that the victim has been identified as Subhash (40) and a case has been registered.

Local residents spotted the fire and tried to douse the flames, even as the fire tenders were alerted. Initially, it was not known whether there was anyone in the truck and only after the fire was brought under control, the charred body was found.

Police contacted the victim’s family in Baraut, Uttar Pradesh, from the registration details of the truck. Investigating officers suspect that the fire started from the cabin itself and later spread to other areas of the truck. It is suspected that the victim may have been smoking a cigarette which could have started the fire.
