MUMBAI: The city police are trying their best to get gangster Dawood Ibrahim's nephew Sohail Kaskar from the US, saying he has forged his passport and hence they require his custody.

Sohail is the son of the late Noora Kaskar, who died of kidney failure in Pakistan in 2010. Sohail was arrested in 2014 in Spain by the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) on charges of narco-terrorism and providing support to Colombian rebels. He was held along with Hameed Chisti alias Benny, Wahab Chisti and one Ali Danish and taken to the US, where he was convicted. He has now served his term. The three men held in 2014 had allegedly discussed transportation of heroin and surface-to air-missiles to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, a terror group.

A police officer said, "He has not mentioned his father's name in the passport he is carrying now. The passport was renewed by the Indian Mission in Dubai on July 11, 2013. His name is mentioned as Shaikh Mohamed Sohael." The passport is valid till July 10, 2023. Sources said Sohail, who was earlier based in Dubai, has renewed his passport. "At the time of renewal, in a normal scenario, officials do not cross-verify the information. But if there is a change in name or date of birth, the passport is not issued," the officer said. tnn

TOI has got hold of a copy of Sohail's passport.

Sources said the Dawood gang does not want Sohail to be sent to India and is trying to get him deported to Dubai, where he used to live with his family. According to the rulebook, a person arrested in any country for any crime, after completion of his punishment, is deported to his country of origin. Officials said India would use the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty to get him back.

A police officer said they would try to get his custody as it would help them gain information about Dawood and his activities. Police said there is not a single case against Sohail, but his deportation will help Indian authorities in establishing that Dawood and his aides are in Pakistan and under the influence of ISI.

Sohail had fled India, along with Dawood and Noora, among others, after the Mumbai serial blasts of 1993, and gone to Dubai. His uncle and father Noora then shifted to Karachi. By 2000, Sohail started handling the narcotics and arms trade for the gang from the Middle East to Africa and up to Europe and the US. Sohail was also apparently involved in supply of arms and ammunition to terror groups.
