‘Infra work debris being dumped on mangroves at JNPT’
Umesh K Parida | tnn | Dec 25, 2018, 22:47 ISTNavi Mumbai: Residents and activists have alleged that mangroves along the Karal phata are being destroyed with land filling being done for the construction of a rail overbridge around JNPT. They have said that the wetlands stretching upto several hundred metres will be destroyed if this continues.
Uran activist Vivek Kadu alleged, “For the construction of a column of the rail overbridge at Karal phata, the constractor took out mud and has dumped on the nearby mangroves. The existing mud area is being land filled. As the dumped mud near the mangroves is not removed, this will affect the wetlands.”
He added that around 20-metre area has been dumped with mud. The same will be stretched along several hundred metres as the bridge work progresses. “Government agencies are least bothered about wetland and mangrove protection,” he said.
Another activist, Shashank Mhatre, claimed, “The land was used for paddy cultivation, etc decades ago. Mangroves were planted by government officials. Now the same government agencies are destroying the mangroves by filling the land for construction of the bridge. State government, JNPT and Cidco are executing various projects. This has led to destruction of mangroves.”
Nandkishor Kupte, assistant conservator of forests, said, “The local forest officials have been asked to visit the area and submit a report. If anyone is found destroying the mangroves, they will not be spared.”
