They allegedly tortured him in custody

An FIR has been lodged against four Tripura police personnel for alleged custodial torture of a tribal youth who was later found dead at his house in the Baijalbari area in Khowai district.

A police team from the Baijalbari police outpost raided the house of Nirad Debbarma at Sonaraibari locality and picked up his son Pritam Debbarma, 23, on charges of trading drugs. Pritam was at the house with friends while his parents were away in Agartala during the raid on December 20.

The police team took Pritam to the outpost and allegedly tortured him before his parents secured his release. He was found hanging from the ceiling in his room the next day morning.

Mr. Nirad Debbarma said family members and neighbours tried their best to console Pritam, but the latter was constantly weeping. The parents blamed the police for their son’s death by “putting him behind bars on false charge and beating his mercilessly”.

On instructions of the Home Department, the police registered an FIR against Baijalbari outpost officer-in-charge Sukanta Debbarma, sub-inspector Subir Debbarma and two constables for allegedly abetting the death of Pritam Debbarma.
