PATIALA: In a bid to counter smoking and tobacco usage in public, the Patiala health department on Monday conducted raids and issued challans to 24 shopkeepers and others under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (Cotpa) Act.
The health team also collected Rs 3,800 as fine from violators under the Act. The officials claimed that despite the ban, tobacco products were being sold at shops in various areas.
The raids were conducted at Nabha road, bus stand, Leela Bhawan chowk, Chotti Baradari, Bhadson road and Samana road to check the sale of tobacco products.
Officials added that shopkeepers who were slapped fines were selling lighters and loose cigarettes, which was in violation of the Act. They said that around 24 violators were fined under Sections 4 and 6 of the Cotpa Act.
"Shopkeepers are not allowed to sell loose cigarettes or sell lighters and matchbox. We are strengthening the drive and raids will be conducted at hotels and other areas," said civil surgeon Manjit Singh.
