Teachers protest demanding equal pay for equal work

Representative imageCHENNAI: Tension prevailed at state school education directorate premises in Nungambakkam on Monday after government school teachers turned in huge numbers to protest against their pay anomalies.
Earlier, members of State Secondary Grade Teachers Association met state school education minister K A Sengottaiyan and expressed their grievances. As talks failed, hundreds arrived at Nungambakkam calling for immediate action.
Protesting teachers, handling Classes IX and X, claimed they were receiving lesser pay compared to their peers handling same classes in the same school. “While those appointed before May 31, 2009, receive Rs 11,300 as salary, those appointed after that receive only Rs 7,400 a month,” said secretary of the association.
Around 21,000 were receiving Rs 3,000 less even when they were better qualified (cleared Teacher Eligibility Test), he said. Despite assurances of forming one-man commission to resolve the issue, nothing has materialised in the past 10 years, he added. Police held talks with protesters and detained a few.
