Vijay Rupani grants Rs 2,285 crore aid to Gujarat farmers
TNN | Dec 26, 2018, 02:06 ISTRAJKOT: Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani on Tuesday announced an input assistance of Rs 2,285.59 crore to 23.25 lakh farmers in the state's 96 scarcity-hit talukas who have suffered heavy crop loss .
The assistance is seen as a move to placate distressed farmers, who are reeling under severe financial crunch due to crop failure caused by deficient rainfall, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. Rupani, completed one year in office on Tuesday, made the announcement while addressing farmers at an event organised on occasion of 'Good Governance Day' in Rajkot .
Agrarian crisis in Saurashtra has already resulted in 19 farmers ending lives since September this year. The CM also announced setting up of water desalination plants at Porbandar, Bhavnagar, Veraval, Dwarka and Jodiya with capacity of 100 MLD. Each plant will be built at cost of Rs 100 crore. Water from these plants will primarily be used for agriculture.
