PUNE: Another option is added in the feather of educational options for girls, as Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha (MKSSS) has launched a new one year diploma course on 'Automotive Mechatronics' which will start from January 15, 2019.

The course will be initiated by Institute of Mechatronics under the aegis of MKSSS, in Cummins College of Engineering campus. The course has been designed by Mercedes Benz which has extended its help by providing technological support.

Over 29,000 girl students are currently studying in 62 educational units of MKSSS.

In a letter addressing director of the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), Abhay Wagh, secretary of MKSSS PVS Shastry, stated that the need to start such course was felt due to non-availability of skilled automobile technicians, necessary for the latest and high-end technology cars. It has created a need for skilled automobile experts for production, dealership, sales, and services. The course focuses on the placement of students in Mercedes Benz, other car distributors/dealers, manufacturing plants and companies and research centres.

The institute will start the course with an intake of 20 seats from the year 2019.

“This has been a male-dominating sector for several years. However, if considered the four or five centres which run automotive mechatronics course in the country, at least five to six students are girls in a class of 50. These institutes have been receiving 50-60 applications for the course from girls in recent years. Therefore, with regards to this, we understood its demand. Hence, we have started the course to create an opportunity for girls in this sector,” said Prof Parag Chaware, head of Institute of Mechatronics.
