Burglar wanted in 50 cases nabbed in Adambakkam

CHENNAI: A 38-year-old man from Ramanathapuram, who was involved in more than 50 burglary cases, has been arrested in Chennai. Police picked him from a place in Adambakkam on Monday. They recovered 40 sovereigns of stolen gold jewellery he had deposited with his friend in Tiruchi. Police said the gold was from eight burglaries the man committed in and around St Thomas Mount.

Adambakkam police inspector A Murali said the accused, Mohammad Haneef, would identify houses well in advance and break in after the residents had gone to sleep.


“He is not a burglar in a hurry,’ said inspector Murali. “He would spend up to a couple of hours in a before leaving with the booty in a cloth bag. Things in the kitchen and refrigerator were his favourite.”


He was last booked by the Rajamangalam police in 2015 for involving in a series of burglaries in the city. He was found on the terrace of an elderly couple in Santhome. He came out on bail in Jaunary this year and has been roaming like a beggar on Marina beach, railway stations and bus stations.


He has a steel plate implanted in his right leg after a road accident. He used used public transport like suburban trains annd MTC buses. He always walked to the houses he targeted. After the burglary, he would walk back to the nearest railway station or bus station, as if heading he is to board a bus or train for his home town, with the bag.
