CHENNAI: A constable of the Chennai police tried to frame a friend he had fallen out with by getting a packet of ganja planted in his bike, but CCTV camera footage saved an innocent man from going to jail. Police are on the lookout for the constable while the man who planted the ganja on his instructions has been sent to Puzhal jail.
Constable Ramadurai was apparently angered by something his friend Satish had said to him while they were drinking with another friend Arumugam on Saturday night.
He got hold of 200 grams of ganja and convinced Arumugam to leave the packet inside Satish’s bike.
Arumugam duly planted the narcotic inside the fuel tank cover and informed Ramadurai.
The constable then made an anonymous call to the Sankar Nagar police station saying there was ganja in a bike parked there. Satish had gone to the station to meet someone and had parked his bike outside, which was when Arumugam planted the drug.
Under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, a person in possession of narcotics would get a minimum of seven years in jail.
Police examined the bike parked near the police station and found the ganja. A shocked Satish insisted that he was innocent. Police checked the CCTV camera footage recorded at the Sankar Nagar station to verify his claim.
The camera footage showed Arumugam putting a parcel inside Satish’s bike. Police then nabbed Arumugam who revealed all. Police found Ramadurai’s house locked when they went looking for him.
The Sankar Nagar police have named Ramadurai as accused number one in the first information report (FIR) and Arumugam as accused number two.
Senior police officers have ordered that Arumugam be placed under suspension. A hunt has been launched for the policeman.
