A group of kayakers spent hours stranded in thick mud before they were winched to safety in a dramatic early morning rescue.

Two men, aged 29 and 58, and a woman, 29, spent hours stuck in the mud near Venus Bay in Gippsland, Victoria on Monday.

The trio had set out to explore the Anderson inlet at the head of Venus Bay on Monday afternoon, but later became stuck and called emergency services. 

The PolAir police helicopter winched the group to safety shortly after midnight. 

They were assessed by paramedics, but did not suffer any injuries.
