A delegation of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) sought Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s support to their campaign against the passage of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2018 in Parliament on December 27.
AIMPLB leaders Moulana Khalid Saifullah, Jaffer Jilani, Umrain Mahepuj, Asma Jahera, Moulana Abdul Basit, Moulana Asif Nadvi, Mufti Md. Farooqi Khasmi and Saida Ayesha told Mr. Naidu that the Modi government was trying to derive political mileage by changing the Muslim marriage system which was being practised for 1400 years. They said a majority of the political parties were opposing the proposed Bill.
Promising his cooperation to the fight against the Muslim Women’s Bill, Mr. Naidu said the Central government was bent on using the proposed legislation to meet its political ends. The TDP government implemented several welfare programmes for Muslims and it was committed to protecting their interests, he said.
