File a caveat for now, Vaiko tells govt.

MDMK leader Vaiko has urged the State government not to appeal against the National Green Tribunal’s verdict on Sterlite Copper, citing a recent order of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court which restrained the company from reopening the smelter in Thoothukudi.

In a statement, he said that the State government should only file a caveat in the Supreme Court for now.

The State government can approach the Supreme Court only when Sterlite moves the top court against the Madurai Bench order, the MDMK leader said.

He also slammed the ruling AIADMK government, saying its statement on the permanent closure of the plant was just an eye wash, and that it was “running with the hare and hunting with the hounds”.

Assembly session

The MDMK leader urged the State government to call for a special Assembly session and pass a resolution on the plant’s closure. The State Cabinet should take a policy decision to close the plant, he added.

He also urged the State government to file a case in the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court.
