KOLKATA : Get ready to make the most of the coldest Christmas in Kolkata in at least the past five years. The mercury has been below the normal mark for the past few days and is expected to remain so for now. And Kolkatans have begun their year-end celebrations early.
An uninterrupted flow of the cold and dry northwesterly winds has raised hopes for a longer innings for the chill. The temperature dipped to 12.6°C on Sunday from Saturday’s 12.7°C, and the Met office expects it to further climb down, when Kolkatans get into the Yuletide spirit, and stay around 12°C. By the next weekend, the temperature might dip as low as 11°C, the Met office said.

“In the absence of any weather system that would block or retard the pace of the northwesterly winds, the chill factor will remain. And it is expected to stay longer this time around,” said an official at the Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata.
On Sunday, Kolkatans thronged city hot spots like Victoria Memorial Hall, Alipore zoo, Eco Park and Maidan, making most of the December weather all wrapped up in their woollens.

Last year, the minimum temperature on Christmas in Kolkata was 14.7°C, dipping below the previous year’s 17.1°C. In 2015 and 2014, it was 18.1°C and 20.3°C respectively.
The dip in the mercury started last week after cyclone Phethai triggered some rainfall. It was 16.1°C last Tuesday and plunged by two degrees the next day. There has been no stop after that.
