Bharuch/Vadodara: The services of around 100 contractual workers employed at Statue of Unity (SoU) were terminated by BVG India for going on leave without giving any intimation during the Director Generals of Police Conference at Kevadiya Colony in Narmada district from December 20 to 22.
When the workers reached the SoU to resume their duties on December 23, they were not allowed by the management, a company officer said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also attended the conference of senior police officers where they deliberated upon the internal security of the country.
Tribal leaders had called a three-day Kevadiya bandh from December 20 to 22 to protest against the termination of the workers hired by the company for maintenance of the statue site. A large number of people, including workers, gathered at the VVIP circuit house at Kevadiya Colony and shouted slogans against the management that day. The workers left only after they were assured by police officers about discussing with the management regarding regularizing of their jobs.
Meanwhile, BJP women workers, who had come to Ahmedabad to attend a national convention of the party, reached the SoU on Sunday. At least, 19,531 tourists were registered of whom 12,784 had bought tickets of Rs120 each. However, BJP women workers were allowed to enter from expressway lift without having entry tickets by the SoU management.
Vikash Deshmukh, a tourist from Mumbai who had come to the SoU with his family, said, “This gives a bad image to BJP. Over 2,000 BJP women entered the viewing gallery without tickets." However, the SoU authorities refused to comment on this.
