CHENNAI: At a time when there is a rising demand to bifurcate the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)'s Chennai Circle to improve the maintenance of centrally notified monuments in Tamil Nadu, the Centre has said that there is no proposal for that.

Union culture minister Mahesh Sharma recently responded to a question in the Lok Sabha on whether the government had taken any concrete efforts to bifurcate the Chennai Circle into two for the better administration and care of large number of centrally protected monuments in Chennai Circle.

"There is no such proposal," he said in his response to queries from four Lok Sabha members from Tamil Nadu.

The development comes after archaeological experts raised concern over poor maintenance of archaeological sites by the ASI. There are 420 monuments under the purview of the ASI, functioning under the Union culture ministry.

While the attention on Unesco and ticketed monuments was better, experts alleged that a chunk of monuments largely in southern districts were poorly maintained.
