MANGALURU: A groom-to-be was killed after the two-wheeler he was riding came under the wheels of a truck near Kota in Udupi on Saturday.

The victim is Varun, 33, a resident of Thekkatte. He was working abroad from the past few years, and had returned home a few days ago as his marriage was fixed in the last week of December. After coming home, he had borrowed his friend’s motorbike to move around. On Saturday, he was riding the bike from Thekkatte to Saligrama temple. On the way, a road roller was moving ahead, and while overtaking, his motorbike brushed against the vehicle. Varun lost control over the motorbike and fell on the road. A truck that was coming fast from the opposite direction ran over him, killing him on the spot.

Police added that the victim’s wedding was fixed on December 30 at Saligrama Kalyana Mantapa. The bride hailed from Kalavara.

Sources added that, Varun, who was employed abroad, was supposed to arrive in India on Wednesday, however, as his leave was granted early, he arrived on December 20. After coming here, he got busy in preparing for the wedding.

Soon after getting the news about Varun’s death, the victim’s relative, Girija, 67, a resident of Koteshwara, died of cardiac arrest. Sources added that Girija, Varun, and his parents were staying together in Dandeli in the past.
