NAVI MUMBAI: That a comfy hatchback vehicle can have many more uses besides packing the car for a family outing, was shown by two men arrested in Bhiwandi on Sunday for illegally transporting slaughtered cattle. A team of animal activists and police who intercepted the car were stunned to find bloodied body parts of as many as five cows and bullocks tightly packed in the medium sized sedan class vehicle.
"The entire rear end of the Toyota Etios five-door hatchback was completely filled with hacked heads, hoofs and other body parts of the freshly killed cattle. Blood was oozing out of the vehicle when we stopped the car. These are the new tricks that butchers are using to illegally transport animal meat, due to the flexibility offered in a hatchback designed car to increase the cargo volume at the back," said activist Bhavin Gathani of the Mumbai based NGO, Karuna Parivar.
An official at Kongaon police station in Bhiwandi told TOI, "Two persons Wasiul Shaikh (24) and Yusuf Kureshi (40) were arrested for illegally carrying animal meat in a car. Further inquiry is on to nab two more wanted men in this case."
On Monday, the police custody of the arrested duo was further extended by two days by the local Bhiwandi court. They have been booked under relevant sections of the Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act, 2015.
"Police seized over 750 kg of illegal beef from the vehicle, which was plying from Padagha village in Bhiwandi to Govandi in Mumbai. After, I received a tip-off about this illegal transportation, I immediately sought the help of Maharashtra police and then with the assistance of local cops, the duo was arrested and the animal meat samples sent for further testing,'' said Gathani.
He further added: ``If the officials and employees at various toll plazas in the state become more alert about such cases of animal cruelty, then the illegal butchers will not be able to operate in such a brazen manner. In the past, we have also seen how live cows and buffalos have been shoved in small tempos to be taken for slaughter. Often, some animals die en route out of suffocation, while others get blinded if the horn of another cattle pierces into their eye."
