NAVI MUMBAI: Two infotech engineers died after their car and a container trailer collided on Mumbai-Pune Expressway, at Khalapur, around 7am on Monday. The two—Chillapalli Lekhi Chaitanya (28) and Mannem Venkat Saikumar (24)—died on the spot.
The front portion of the car, which they had hired, had slid beneath the rear of the trailer and was completely smashed. A police officer said that the wreckage of the front portion was jutting inwards, almost touching the driver’s seat. It was not immediately clear which of the two was behind the wheel. The two men were extricated from the car and taken to a hospital where they were declared ‘brought dead on arrival’.
A day earlier, a couple died in a similar accident on the Expressway. The couple’s car had also hit the rear of the truck.
In the latest accident, the deceased were returning from Pune. They worked for an IT firm in Navi Mumbai.
While some police officials said that the container possibly slowed down, leading to the crash, constable Sachin Vhaskoti said that the trailer driver, Gajanan Jangale (27), who is from Parbhani, has claimed that the car was “at a high speed”. For now, an offence of ‘negligent driving causing death’ has been registered against the trailer driver at Panvel taluka police station.
The family members of the deceased who have been informed about the deaths were on their way to Mumbai to claim the bodies.
