One critic among her 51,973 followers accused her of failing to acknowledge the Christian significance of Christmas.

'It's Christmas and will always be Christmas,' he said.

Near the end of her video demonstration, Senator Faruqi had in fact wished her followers a Merry Christmas.

'And there you have it, a mango, lychee and passionfruit pavlova. Merry Christmas and happy holidays everyone,' she said.

In her maiden speech to Parliament in August, the Sydney-based senator for New South Wales claimed that 'everyone who is not a straight, white man' was subjected to 'online harassment, bullying and toxicity'.

In November, Senator Faruqi was called a 'maggot' and told to 'p*** off back to where you came from' on social media after she argued the Melbourne Cup was cruel to horses.

In her latest video the 55-year-old senator, who only renounced her dual Pakistani citizenship in 2017, told her followers she had first tried a pavlova as a girl.

'While I didn't grow up in Australia, I did have my first pavlova in my early teens in Pakistan,' she said.

'We had some Australian visitors at home and my mum wanted to make them feel really welcome so she made a pavlova, bananas on top and ever since, I've had this love for pavlova.'

In her three-minute video, she made a Donna Hay recipe, using 'organic, free-range eggs' which she had described as a 'family tradition'.
