Sadly the "cutthroat" in the title of this quick-fire American cooking competition doesn't refer to pirates, but despite this the show is a ludicrous spin on the reality genre. Challenged to make a breakfast quesadilla by host Alton Brown, the four chefs contesting tonight's first episode have 60 seconds to grab ingredients, but then they bid on what inadequate source of heat – such as a flat iron hair straightener – their competitors must work with. This is MacGyver cooking, or perhaps MacGruber, but the silliness adds to the amusement while suggesting, with a knowing wink, how formulaic the entire genre is. CM
