Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao's efforts to stitch a separate coalition can potentially jeopardise his rival Chandrababu Naidu's plans for an umbrella alliance to take on the BJP ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Buoyed by his emphatic win in the state poll, Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) chief KCR has given a call for an anti-Congress and anti-BJP front – and is hopping from state to state. During his 7-day campaign that started on Sunday, he has already met two key opposition party heads – Naveen Patnaik of Biju Janata Dal and Mamata Banerjee of Trinamool Congress. KCR is now slated to meet Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati whose participation is essential for any grand coalition.

All these four parties have so far stayed away from committing despite Naidu's best efforts.

Though KCR is yet to receive a firm commitment from any of these parties, his attempts have created a stir in the Congress camp.

Many Congress leaders are certain that it is BJP chief Amit Shah's brain that is powering KCR's push for a federal front.

"This is the only way the duo of Modi and Shah can think to win elections as they know odds are against them. But we are sure that the opposition parties know the pitfalls and will not fall into this trap," said a senior Congress leader. Earlier too, the Congress had accused the BJP of colluding with KCR after he abruptly dissolved the assembly, forcing an early poll in Telangana.

Responding to the development, the BJP on Monday said the Congress and its president Rahul Gandhi are not acceptable as a pivot to many opposition parties.

"That the so-called Opposition unity against the BJP is a bogus claim is evident from the multiple fronts being forged by non-NDA parties," said BJP spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao. The spokesperson said his party will highlight the fact that such "ragtag" coalitions are a threat to the stability and development of the country and are being driven by personal agendas.
