Tirunelveli
Around 200 young chess talents from various places came together at The Hindu In School Chess Competition 2018 here on Sunday.
The competition saw children from Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari districts competing in the Under-9, Under-11, Under-13 and Under-15 categories.
The competition, sponsored by Camlin Kokuyo, was organised with under the aegis of Tirunelveli District Chess Development Association.
Dimittra.G and Nitin Kumar.P won the first place in the Under-9 group under the girls and boys categories respectively, while Gowtham Dhileepan.S, Siddhartha.B and Tawfeeqa.S were runners-up in their respective gender categories.
Similarly, in the Under-11 category, Hemaruthrra.R and Hari Hara Jagan.S.A emerged winners, as Mitul Bala.S, Balasubramanian.R and Asfia.N were close contenders.
Charumathi.G and Yukash Ram.E pipped their counterparts in the Under-13 category, in which Mahalaxmi, Jesudoss.S and Gowtham.S.G earned a close second spot.
Mohana.D and Ruban Sanjai.M won the top spot in the Under-15 category, while Priyadharshini, Siddhesvarajith.P.S and Mohammed Ibrahim were runners. Consolation prizes were also given.
A cash award of ₹1000, ₹700 and ₹300 were given to first, second and third prize winners respectively.
Jayendran V. Mani, correspondent of Sri Jayendra Swamigal Silver Jubilee Matric Higher Secondary School, Maharaja Nagar was the chief guest at the event. The school was the venue sponsor in the event powered by Thyrocare. Kajah Group and Rajah Energy Drinks were the beverages partners, while Me Too Snacks was the snacks partner.
